We took a 4 1/2 mile circular walk with friends from the allotments today. The weather is unusual for November in the UK with temperatures reaching as warm as 58f in sunny Surrey. Heavy rain yesterday meant the ground was very muddy.
We started at Outwood Windmill, which is just up the road from our home.
Past this pretty little house is the entrance to the woods.
The pathways were covered in beautiful golden leaves and the ditch alongside was running fresh rainwater, the sound of the running water made it magical.
It was Armistice Day today. As we approached the village of Horne, we saw people coming from the church. We had missed the service but were invited in to see the beautiful display of crocheted poppies above the aisle and a photo display of the local men who had lost their lives in the first World War... one soldier was called Christmas Day! He died with his brother in battle.
We noticed the poppies held rainwater.
Our circular walk took us back to The Bell at Outwood for lunch. I had potato and leak soup, hubby had sausages.
Surprising to see so many flowers mixed in with Autumn colours.

What a beautiful display of remembrance and gratitude in that church. "Lest We Forget"
ReplyDeleteThe poppies in the church were all.made by one elderly lady. They sldo had branches of foliage on every windowsill and ...boxes of tissues in the pews which I was told is for funerals!
DeleteYour photos are just stunning Betty - I love all the poppies. It's still a very picturesque time of year where you live - I love autumn just as much as spring time. Enjoy your week Betty. xx
ReplyDeleteAutumn here is strange this year Julie as we have flowers like snapdragon and bizzy lizzy in the garden, yet the trees have dropped all their leaves.
DeletePretty dismal here yesterday. Did virtually nothing after a busy weekend! Got my sewing group today though so impetus to get moving and next week we're all going out for Xmas lunch! Maybe your allotments will organise Xmas lunch? Glad you've left work far behind you!xxx
ReplyDeleteYes we have a Christmas dinner booked :)
DeleteA good walk..and you are having it unseasonably mild.
ReplyDeleteI have manure envy.....
We are lucky it's brought from a stables near here and we can take 3 barrow loads for £2
DeleteWhat a pretty little church. It sounds perfect! It’s even been warm up here in Yorkshire xx
ReplyDeleteYes all the UK is experiencing this wonderful sunshine but I'm wondering how it affects birds and insects.
DeleteI've loved the mild weather, the rain not so much!
ReplyDeleteThat looked like a lovely walk, the windmill is fabulous.
Our raspberry canes came from Wilko (sob!), I'm still harvesting loads of them - between the showers! xxx
Beautiful walk! I love the idea of the poppies, we don't have such a thing like Armistice Day. Holland was neutral in WW1.
ReplyDeleteHello! Once upon a time, you and I were penpals. I would love the opportunity to write you again, but not quite sure of the correct forum to exchange addresses. If you’re interested, I could put my email in a comment and we could go from there.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, lovely to find you again and, as always, fun to see where you’re wandering and what you’re doing.
Best Regards,
Laura (aka Gypsy Mom)
Hi Laura! I wondered what happened to you and just left a message on your blog. Im not keeping up with bloggers via letter/email any longer, I travel a lot and just couldn't keep up the commitment as there were quite a few of you! but via my blog there's always room for chats in the comments (if you want to keep it private just note it 'do not publish' and I hope you will follow/visit and stay in touch through my blog. I saw on your blog that you have been dormant for a while but hope all is going well and that you will start your blog up again. Lovely to here from you! Betty
DeleteThat sounds like such a lovely walk complete with Autumn leaves, a windmill, and sheep grazing in the field.
ReplyDeleteYou had beautiful weather too 💗
