This Week

I took a cheap day return train to Brighton.  The mission was to try on the new Emmylou dress at my favourite shop, All About Audrey.  They have made this lovely modern day replica of a 70s hippy kaftan.  But it justn't wasn't right for me .   from this changing room pic I see not enough material for my liking and the rear view was not the best... hair's getting long though which is good.... but never mind about the dress, I already have a few very beautiful things from this shop (that specialises in vintage and recycled sari silk made into floaty dresses) and the kaftan of my dreams will one day appear on EBay at a fraction of the retail price, hopefully.

I'm loooking plump, gym has not been visited much lately. bursitis of the hip and carpal tunnel of my hand are my excuse.  I kept up swimming 30 lengths twice a week though.  Will do better.

Brighton was cold and grey, there was no sign of all the lovely paper lanterns of Solstice night, recycled no doubt, but there was a delicious avocado wrap and hot coffee waiting for me at Pret and a nice look round the chazza shops, but nothing of note brought home.  It was a good day for sea air and a lot of walking in flat, comfy boots though.  As I spent childhood holidays here with granny and her nutty sisters Hilda, Lily and Babs, I have some very happy memories and enjoyed wandering The Lanes just like I did as a child of the 60s.  They would have approved of the kaftan dress.

Window shopping only ... I spotted a very lovely amethyst ring, its my birth stone.

I took the Christmas tree and foliage swags down yesterday, it feels empty in the house without all the fairy lights and bling.  I forgot to put the curtains back up... am not sleeping well, infact blogging at 4 in the morning here which is not healthy.

I have been to my allotment over Christmas, saw deer up there several times (the other plotholders want to prevent them getting in, but I don't mind sharing a bit of veg with them.   had to check my red onions.  Sprouts and leeks are ready and I couldn't resist moving the spades and paraphernalia of netting/pea sticks and plastic tubes around to make them look more arty in my manure box.  OCD is featuring heavily at the moment.

My recent shopping has been boring and sensible, some non slip matting for the back door, as the patio gets slippy, but the cat hates the new rubber outdoor mat and leaps like a gazelle over it rather than step over it.  I felt it was essential to replenish underwear supplies  - 'new year new undies' is my motto.

We are half way through watching a real life 4 part tv series which we recorded Mr Bates v The Post Office .   700 postmasters were wrongly accused/prosecuted for mismanagement of funds.  This was due to bugs in the Fujitso software, Horizon, installed in UK post offices Nationwide.  The books didn't balance and the Post Office prosecuted these poor people for mismanaging or removing funds - some were prosecuted, convicted and even went to prison, wrongly.  It's heartbreaking to think of the years of misery these people went through fighting their cases...

This weekend we will be visiting our oldest son in Tooting (London) for a curry and a quick look round the ethnic food shops in the area where I hope to stock up on fenugreek leaves and black mustard seeds for making our own curries.

I'm off to catch up on some sleep now!

  1. What a travesty of justice the Mr Bates affair has been, 20 years and still going on. Dont let the deer eat all your vegetables!

    1. Thanks Annie, I wish you could come along too.. and I wish Lumo would do ridiculously cheap train trips to Edinburgh so we could have another crack at doing that trip! I love my body though so don't worry, just have unrealistic expectations of what a dress can do!

  3. Hello Betty! I'm sorry to hear about the insomnia, Jon's struggling with it at the moment, too. I hope you're having a fabulous time exploring Tooting, which I'll always associate with Citizen Smith.
The Post Office thingy is on our list, I remember hearing about in on BBC Breakfast when the news broke in 2020 and watching in absolute horror.
There's nothing wrong with your body (I've seen you in a bikini on a travel post and you'd give a Bond Girl a run for her money), the placement on that kaftan looks off to me, the contrasting print is too high up, it needs to below your bum - the naked Generation ones seem to be the same. I love Audrey's Raven dress, it's a shame she doesn't sell printed versions.
That ring is gorgeous, I'm very fond of amethysts. The Setting is lovely, it lets the stone do the talking. xxx

    1. Hi Vix, thank you so much for the contrasting print point, the shop do have a disclaimer about the print variations on their web, it is pot luck - they had sent 2 for me to try on at the shop and they were completely different in placement. It is a shame as if they could get this right would sell loads more. Im not on commission btw! Couldnt justify the price without perfection!

  5. I have a top from All About Audrey. It's a beautiful boutique isn't it? You're so lucky to be able to go in and browse.
What a magical experience your deer encounter must have been! Our garden backs on to woodland and we recently spotted what we thought was a dog trapped in our garden. It turned out to be a Muntjac deer!
It's outrageous what happened to those poor Post Office workers. I hope they get the justice and peace they deserve.
    Enjoy your currry! x Claire

    1. Hi Claire, you know All about Audrey are really nice people, I messaged them before going to the shop and they put the dresses I wanted to try into the shop in a bag for me - so I didn't have to worry about not having my size to try on. The shop is crammed with goodies though so worth a trip. Yes those little Muntjac deer are what we have running around, they are so dainty, you wonder how they get enough to eat!

  6. Great post Betty. You are so not looking plump! I am the heaviest I have ever been & my weight has re-distributed itself to different parts of my body. I need to take myself in check. 😖
I bought a new doormat on sale & the littlest cat will not go on it but jumps over it too ... so I smiled at Mollie cat doing that! I have taken Christmas down & the house feels bigger & clearer. Enjoy your weekend Betty xx

    1. Hi Julie, I think a bit of weight distribution is not a problem, we just need to keep an eye on it :) I hope you won't worry too much as better to be health than a stick insect.

  10. Hello Betty :=)
I have happy memories of Brighton. We, my late husband and I visited a friend in East Sussex, but had a few hours in the Brighton antique shops. I bought a ring with my birthstone which is agate. I later gave it to my granddaughter, and she still wears it. I hope you find the perfect dress /Kaften on another day. You are kind to leave some beetroot leaves out for the deer.:=) I will look out for the post office series, with Toby Can't think of the surname, but know he is a good actor. The true story is shocking.
    Have a good day
    All the best
    Sonjia.
